Emergency maintenance on the Wadi al-Baqr and Wadi al-Rum dams to boost their readiness for the rainy season in Deir ez-Zor governorate
The staff of the Water Resources Directorate in Deir ez-Zor have started emergency maintenance work on the Wadi Al-Baqar and Wadi Al-Rum dams, located in the Deir ez-Zor desert east of the Euphrates, around the Mahimideh area, as part of preparations to ensure the water harvesting facilities are ready to handle rainwater and floods.
The work included conducting field inspections to assess the technical condition of the two dams and identify their needs, and carrying out the necessary maintenance under the supervision of specialised engineers and technicians, with work expected to continue in the coming days to complete the maintenance requirements and ensure the safety of the structures.
These efforts are important for enhancing the dams' ability to collect rainwater and flash floods and use it to support water reserves in the Syrian desert, as well as in reducing the risks of floods and surface runoff, minimising potential damage to surrounding lands and areas near the wadis.
The General Authority for Water Resources thanks the technical and engineering staff and field workshops at the Deir Ezzor Water Resources Directorate for their quick response and efforts in carrying out the maintenance work, helping to ensure the safety of the water harvesting structures and boosting their readiness for the rainy season.
