Approval of the agricultural irrigation programme in Tartus and the start of the irrigation season at the beginning of May

In preparation for the start of the summer irrigation season, and under the supervision of the Governor of Tartus, Mr Ahmed Al-Shami, an expanded coordination meeting was held at the Tartus Water Resources Directorate, headed by the two executive office members specialised in agriculture and water resources, engineers Bassam Tafaha and Fadi Saba.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Water Resources, Engineer Mohamed Mohrez, the Director of Agriculture, Dr Mohamed Ahmed, a representative from the Homs Water Resources Directorate, technicians, directors of the relevant irrigation projects, and the head of the Farmers' Association for the Tartus area representing the Farmers' Union.

The attendees reviewed the water situation in the governorate, including reservoir storage and spring discharges, as well as preparations implemented prior to the season, coordination mechanisms among the relevant authorities, and the role of water user associations in improving water resource management and reducing waste.

The agricultural situation and appropriate irrigation programmes for crops were also reviewed, emphasising the importance of advisory support for farmers and enhancing integration among the relevant authorities to achieve optimal productivity during the season.

At the conclusion of the meeting, an irrigation schedule was agreed for each project according to the available water quantities, with the start of May set as the commencement of the irrigation season, ensuring a fair distribution of water and stability of agricultural operations during the summer season.
